This auction is a superb ca. 1895 Walter Durfee, Providence, R.I., Oak Grandfather Clock. Durfee was well known for selling only the very finest clocks of the day. As with all Durfee clocks, the construction of the case, dial and movement show uncompromising attention to detail. The clock is 98 1/2" tall, 24" wide and 14" deep. Three brass ball and spire finials sit on top of the broken arch bonnet. The bonnet, waist and base have spiral turned columns with cast bronze capitals. The waist door has thick beveled glass to show the weights and pendulum, with a carved fan above. The clock stands on finely carved paw feet. The dial, which is signed Walter Durfee, Providence is a work of art. The movement is properly signed Walter Durfee on the top edge of the front plate. The clock strikes the hour and half hour on a very large, deep toned, coiled gong. All parts are original to the clock including both door locks, escutcheons and keys. As the photos show, the clock is in the best condition in every way.
