Tiffany & Company Makers Ships Bell Clock for A. Cass Canfield's yacht Sea Fox. Canfield was a yachtsman and amateur naval architect who designed the Sea Fox. The Sea Fox was an iron hulled schooner built by Harlan & Hollingsworth of Wilmington, DE and delivered in May of 1888. She was a very successful racer for many years. By the early 1900's Sea Fox was owned by Anson Phelps Stokes Vice Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and later by Dallas B. Pratt Commodore of the NYYC. The clock movement is stamped 325 which is shown in the Tiffany Makers records and is dated 1882. The Sea Fox had a life long reputation as being "the smartest dressed and most tastefully furnished yacht in commission" to quote a New York Times article form July, 1917. The high style design of this Tiffany & Co. Makers clock with ornate French bezel, heavily beveled glass, enameled cartouche numerals, elegant finely engraved hands and fine cast bronze case certainly added to the finery of her interior decorations. The compendium shown with the clock includes 4 sterling silver trophies won by Sea Fox along a print showing Sea Fox, Grayling and Sachem competing for the Goelet Cup, a photo of the yacht under sail and a perfect original copy of Cruising in the West Indies, by Anson Phelps Stokes. The book chronicles his presentation to the New York Yacht Club on May 15, 1902 proposing a squadron cruise to the West Indies and describes his cruise in the West Indies in fine detail.
